Juniper Publishers- Journal of complementary medicine Abstract Background/Objectives: The purpose of this project is to identify complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use by patients seen at the VA Sepulveda ambulatory care center geriatric clinic. Failure to disclose CAM use to primary care providers may result in adverse interactions with prescribed medical treatments. We hope to increase detection of CAM use, and thus improve the safety of our patients by reducing potentially harmful polypharmacy. Design: Survey study design. Setting: VA Sepulveda ambulatory care center geriatric clinic in Los Angeles, CA. Participants: 137 veterans, majority males, 65 years and older seeing the geriatric medicine team between October 2017 and February 2018. Measurements: Geriatric clinic nurses provided patients and/or their caregivers a one-page questionnaire asking about to use of CAM while patients checked in to clinic. Once the questionnaire was collected, ...

An Amazing PFS with Icotinib in a Lung Adenocarcinomas Patient Harboring Rare Complex Gene Mutations: G719C/ S768I- Juniper Publishers

Image
Juniper Publishers- Journal of complementary medicine Abstract Background and purpose: Nowadays, epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR-TKI) targeted therapy has developed to be the standard therapy for patients with advanced lung adenocarcinomas harboring common EGFR mutations. But the efficacy for the so-called rare and especially for the very rare complex EGFR mutations is not clear. Methods: We describe a case of a 61-year-old male with advanced lung adenocarcinomas harboring rare complex EGFR mutations (G719C and S768I), and observe the clinical efficacy of icotinib, We discuss our case with other literatures. Results: he has a good clinical response to icotinib. His progression-free survival (PFS) has reached to 36 months. Conclusion: It may suggest that lung adenocarcinomas patients harboring rare complex gene mutations (G719C/ S768I) have relatively good efficacy and safety to icotinib. Diabetes: What Your Physician Doesn’t Know- Juniper Publishers

Image
Juniper Publishers- Journal of complementary medicine Opinion Like physicians, most of us associate diabetes with being fat and/or with too much sugar. MDs usually go a little further and talk about your insulin receptors and your pancreas and insulin. Further, they think in terms of managing it. Today, most are open enough to say you can manage different levels of it with diet. And while they are correct, that is only a small piece to the puzzle. First off, diabetes is a symptom not a disease. A diabetic profile can be due to your gut, your liver, your adrenals, even an infection! In fact, your gut, liver and adrenals are usually impacted long before your insulin receptors and the pancreas. But if you only focus on the end result, you will never resolve the cause and you of course, will be on medications for the rest of your life. Are you aware that 80% of those people who are obese - do NOT have diabetes! Further, that many people who are thin do have diab...

Image
Juniper Publishers- Journal of complementary medicine Abstract This study presents a mixed-methods analysis to understand the healing experiences of veterans diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a heart-centered complementary therapy horsemanship program. This therapy was designed to address PTSD symptoms and involved weekly activities involving small group and one-on-one interactions with a horse and riding instructors. Previous work by our group found that this program provided significant improvement in the psychophysiological health of the participants. In this stage, the following research question was addressed: How did the veterans describe their healing experiences with horses in the program? A cohort of 9 combat veteran participants were first analyzed using the positive and negative affect schedule (PANAS) before and after each weekly session of the 8-week program. The PANAS results revealed a significant change in positive affect star...
